Designer: Lane Martin
Project Type: Student Project
School: Fort Hays State University
Course: Portfolio
Tutor: Karrie Simpson Voth
Location: Hays, KS, USA
Packaging Contents: Coffee Bags, French Press, Poster
Packaging Material: Paper

We are The Press.

We love coffee and the people behind what it takes to get you your morning joe. Coffee farmers around the world spend their limited supply of drinking water to grow the beans that we take for granted—our mission is to give back to them. Through the purchase of our whole bean, single-sourced coffee, you are providing agricultural communities worldwide with one of the basic necessities of life: water.

The object is to show coffee culture in a simple and relevant way as well as to raise support and awareness of those in need of clean drinking water in coffee production regions.

What's Unique?
This is a conceptual line that would not only make a quality product in single sourced coffee, but it would also give back to these farmers who use their own clean drinking water to provide their services. This captures the actual individuals "The Press" goes to help, thus creating a following of supporters and not just consumers. In the packaging I wanted to use print that would cut down on costs to be able to get as much support to the farmers. Also using the app and website not just to have them but to go to and see where you are helping, the people you are effecting, and track your purchases.

Designer: Colin Baker
Project Type: Student Project
School: Fort Hays State University
Location: Hays, KS, USA
Packaging Content: Pet Food
Packaging Materials: Paper, Aluminium

Being a youngster growing up in small town Kansas I always wanted to grow up living on a farm. That dream never prevailed, instead, I grew up rummaging the countryside and helping friends involved with farming. Being tied closely to the outdoors, I have always had a dog that holds a spot close to my heart.

The brand name Native, which means coming from its origin of growth, was developed by the concept of farm fresh ingredients going from the farm, their origin of growth, straight into the dog food products. Native uses all-natural, farm fresh ingredient to produce a healthy and hearty product that one would feed to any of his or her best friends!

Project components: Logo design, illustrations, packaging for dry dog food, dry puppy food, dental sticks, gravy topper, vitamin powder, and two flavors of canned food.

The illustrations were created using high-quality images of ingredients that are in each dog food product. The pieced apart illustration style was to portray the rations of each ingredient that's put into the products.

Piantao Wine

Designed by Carolina Saguan
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Zorzal Wines
Location: Mendoza, Argentina
Packaging Content: Wine

History of the wine: The winemaker had everything ready in the winery to receive the Cabernet Franc grapes but the amount of grape that entered into the winery was much less than the expected one. Consequently, grapes did not reach the cooling jackets of the wine making tanks so it was impossible to control the fermentation temperature.

Every time the winemaker was asked about the wine, he answered: There it is, “piantao.” “Piantao” is a word used in the Argentinian lunfardo that means crazy or loony (a friendly word), hence its name. The wine making process continued even when the wine started to have very unpleasant flavours and it would probably be thrown away. However, as time went by, it eventually became the best wine of the winery.
Some samples were sent to well-known wine critics, who granted excellent scores such as 97 pts. by Decanter and 91 pts. by Robert Parker. Its high quality and great recognition were the main reasons to export this wine.
The label had to convey that it was a 100% Argentinian Wine, emphasizing not only its great quality but also its wonderful story about the wine making process.

Market: United States and England

After hearing this story, as a designer, I posed myself the challenge to make a label that really lives up to this beautiful story. The design of the label is inspired by the Argentinian tango "Balada para un Loco” (Ballad for a Madman). It is a wrap-around label that, by means of a very detailed drawing, narrates and describes the story that takes place in the tango, where the main character is called “Piantao” (crazy).
The scene takes place in Caminito, a place of tourism and cultural value, located in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The metal and wooden houses reflect the traditional style of a tenement, a type of precarious popular house that characterized the area from its origins.

The painting technique used in the frame of the label is called "fileteado”. It is a type of artistic painting and drawing style, typically used in Buenos Aires. It is characterized by lines that become spirals, bright colours, the frequent use of symmetry, three-dimensional effects by means of shadows and perspectives. The capsule also uses the “fileteado” technique to complete the packaging design, 100% Argentinian.
