Sumol Packs Personality, Flavour and Refreshment
Portuguese soft drinks company, Sumol+Compal, have relaunched their leading carbonated soft drink, Sumol, with international strategic branding agency, BrandMe. The new design brings a bold and iconic feature of the Sumol brandmark across all consumer touchpoints; designed to hero the unique fruit taste of the core varieties with a fresh personality and contemporary style.

BrandMe were briefed to update the branding of this Portuguese national treasure, the country’s first carbonated soft drink containing real fruit juice, first launched in 1954. The redesign aims to recruit and retain Sumol’s consumer base by rejuvenating the brand image, allowing the brand to stretch to seasonal limited editions.

The new design adopts a clean and geometric graphic architecture, emphasising the 54 degree angle that is synonymous with Sumol’s heritage of being refreshingly individual since 1954. The stripped back design harnesses the brand’s open-minded sense of freedom and its natural refreshing qualities.

Adam Wilford, Associate Creative Director at BrandMe said: “This was a sensitive design update as Sumol is one of Portugal’s most iconic brands. We wanted to strengthen Sumol’s individuality and strong affinity with the creative spirit of Portuguese culture. At the time, we needed to bring greater clarity to the flavour portfolio and help modernise the design to feel more single-minded and appeal to the brand’s core target market.”

Relaunch Shatler´s Cocktails - Ready-to-serve Cocktails are setting a trend

Schwarze & Schlichte is with 350 years of distilling art a spirit producer with international reputation.

With the takeover of the brand Shatler´s Cocktails - a range of 15 cocktails with and without alcohol - on 1.1.2018, Schwarze & Schlichte is focusing on the ready to serve trend.

Product trend meets design trend!
The Shatler´s Cocktails brand was relaunched extensively with the aim to develop its great potential. Thus, our task was to create a design concept as a basis for a new, unseen look for the Shatler´s Cocktails brand. We wanted a brand identity that rejuvenates and modernizes the Shatler's Cocktails brand and give it an "attractive, fresh face". Trend-conscious, new target groups should be addressed and encouraged to try and taste the cocktails.

Our approach
Evaluation of relevant international design and consumer trends, revision of the brand logo Shatler´s Cocktails, the creation of a new packaging design and a new brand world build on that basis. Transferred to the extensive advertising media such as displays, beverage menus, trade fair stands, sales folders and much more, the newly designed brand identity becomes a sparkling cocktail experience for the consumer at all touch points. Confirmed by test results, the new eye-catching design stands for a variety of cocktail pleasures and a relaxed, lively attitude to life. The strong colour contrasts of the varieties, the expressive typography and a lively staging of the ingredients and cocktails give the new design a summery and cheerful look. With exuberant joie de vivre and high quality, the new brand image conveys fun and positive values - for all young and young-at-heart cocktail fans.

Creative Director/Calligraphy: Alex Kodimsky

Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Sunstone Alehouse
Location: Chisinau, Moldova
Packaging Contents: Beer
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Glass bottle, Paper Label
Printing Process: Digital printing

Craft beer holds a special place in the life of our studio. And not just because one of us is also a brewer in their spare time. The very culture of craft beer encourages pushing boundaries both in production and visual representation of the resulting product. This is the realm where rules do not apply, where you can do virtually anything, and there are no things that would be too vivid, unusual, bold. That’s why when Sunstone Alehouse has brewed a double coffee milk stout named Obsidian, we’ve instantly decided to take this experiment further and project it through the prism of our own vision.

The label design for the craft beer Obsidian by Sunstone Alehouse is fully hand-written, which is another obsession of ours, namely for our founder Alex Kodimsky. Each stroke is full of energy and spirit of freedom, trying to escape the confines of the label, and flood everything around it, like hot lava, from which the dark volcanic glass is formed. An intense strong dark beer and an expressive calligraphic label - this is exactly the case when the whole is more than just a sum of its parts. And that’s why we love working with craft beer so much.

Location: Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Packaging Contents: Beer

With the pace of change and the proliferation of competitors, craft brewery years can often feel like dog years, and at 13 years old Thornbridge Brewery was facing a midlife crisis. Having been one of the trailblazers of the craft beer movement, their brand now felt dated and dusty. They needed a brand that could reassert their authority and restore relevance in order to grow in line with their ambitions.

Having conducted a tour of supermarket shelves with the client, Thirst knew Thornbridge needed to monopolise on their ‘recent heritage’ to stand strong in the face of wild, young craft breweries. By rationalising and leveraging their long established equities Thirst set out to reestablish Thornbridge as a beacon of British brewing.

KOS is a brand of natural – and plant-based – solutions created to provide easy and healthy nutritional alternatives for everyone, focusing (for now) on powdered superfoods. They wanted those products to stand out in the marketplace through a bold identity that allowed the company to connect with their customers in a very human and down-to-earth way, because they had seen how boring and non-emotional their competitors were.

In the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death we have thought to celebrate the life and work of the Genius (il Genio, in Italian) creating this special packaging. As we already worked with Cantine Leonardi da Vinci, which are based in Leonardo's hometown, it's been natural, for us, to think of them as a partner in this project.

In order to bring this label to life we have decided to ask other companies, such as Kurz Luxoro, who donated both the foil and the cliche, MCC who printed the labels for free, Cordenons and Avery Dennison who donated the stock material, to join is to develop our project.

Another bright project in the portfolio of liquids for electronic evaporators for Omega Liquids company. At this time, the creators decided to go crazy, gathering the line of rather unusual flavor combinations in one range. They asked me to devise the visual component of the products.

This is how the creators describe their product: This is a liquid with unusual combinations, there is a lot of soda in it (cola, tarragon, fanta), there is sparkling candy, mint gum and even cactus. Therefore, it evokes very bright emotions, fresh and even crazy. There is a strong association with the 80's in USA. We want the same juiciness and brightness. Cinema, fashion, computer games, soda, chewing gum, etc. Burst of color, neon, acidity). A typical feature of the then fashionistas was the afro hairstyle, which became the main symbol on the label.

Tea leaves, infuser and stirrer combined in one stick! We were asked to re-design the packaging of the series.

We thought it was mandatory to have the innovation of Elixir Teasticks visible in the front artwork in order to show how the product works. Vibrant colours and delicious tea and fruits compositions were used to increase the appetizing appeal of the product. We also kept the dots pattern from the previous design, an element inspired from the tiny holes in the teastick.

7 Coline is a new line of blended wines by the renown Moldovan producer Vinaria din Vale. The new product is a token of appreciation to the company’s origins and its family traditions. For the story of this particular winemaker begins with an apiary in the south of Moldova, where the grandfather of the current company owner had a small beekeeping property. As years went by, a small private vineyard was planted beside the apiary, which ultimately grew into what today is Vinaria din Vale. Namely this story had to be reflected in the label design for the new wines 7 Coline.

For a gluten-free bakery, take the flour and add a little negation. Flour, in italian is farina. If you add the word no, you will get a new word: farinò, a fusion between flour and no.

Packaging Contents: Wine
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Glass bottle
Printing Process: Offset printing

COMISURA is the first wine that launches a new winery on the market located in the Sierra de Gredos, in the center of Spain (Bodega HUELLAS DEL TIÉTAR). The intention of the winery is to recover old and abandoned vines in the area due to their low profitability and to put them back into value by producing high quality wines. They work manually and very traditionally in scattered vineyards. They asked EPICA Branding & Packaging to transfer this love to the labels and communicate it to the consumer. The other important idea to communicate by the winery is that their wines are for enjoyment, to share and to make the wine moments memorable.

For all this, EPICA Branding & Packaging's proposal for the design of the labels was to create an emotional experience for the consumer; simple, direct and appetizing.
